Absolutely Heroic: Brothers Rescued From Burning House
Published: April 20, 2007
Pulled from the flames: two rescuers rush into a burning house late in the night and pull out two young boys, possibly saving their lives.
A 4-year-old and 6-year-old were inside their home on John Street in Hudson Falls Monday night, when it burst into flames. Luckily, nearby, were some very brave men who literally busted in and pulled both brothers out. Tuesday, they are recovering in Westchester.
NEWS10’s Tracy Egan spoke with one of the men to hear about their heroic act.
The fire at 91 John Street was so smokey, it took several tries before Hudson Falls Police Sgt. Todd Lemery and the other rescuers could reach the boys in their upstairs bedroom.
“We’re shining our flashlights back and forth, yelling to the kids - we could hear the kids inside - to have them come to the flashlights,” says Sgt. Lemery.
A neighbor describes the scene out on the sidewalk on John Street, which is right near Poplar Street, as chaotic. The mother was down there - her face covered with soot, along with her 11-year-old daughter and 15-month-old son - calling out to the boys who were stuck upstairs. At the same time, they were calling out to their mother.
“I was able to grab one little boy’s leg, and Patrolman Kibling grabbed his arm because he was confused,” Sgt. Lemery says. “He tried to run back in to the fire, and we just ran down the stairs to the ambulance.”
Ambulance attendants worked on the 4-year-old, and moments later, the assistant fire chief from Kingsbury and an EMT from Ft. Edward brought out his 6-year-old brother. Both boys had extensive burns.
Hudson Falls Deputy Police Chief Randy Diamond says it is amazing the rescuers did not get burned as well.
“It’s absolutely heroic,” says Deputy Chief Diamond. “It’s certainly something they should be commended for, for putting their own lives at risk to save lives of other people.”
The heroes did not stop caring when they brought the boys out of the burning building. They accompanied them to Glens Falls Hospital, and Tuesday evening they say they are still in their prayers.
