Rooftop bird rescue

CUSTOMERS at an Axminster cafe watched in horror as a trapped pigeon writhed around above the HSBC bank across the road.
The bird is not the first to have been caught up in netting installed to deter pigeons from fouling on town buildings.
The pigeon, nicknamed Percy by its rescuers, was caught in netting above the bank in Trinity Square on Monday, March 26, in view of diners in the Route 66 window seats.
Cafe co-owner Gina King, 34, said: “The poor thing was distressed and wouldn’t stop flapping.”
The RSPCA was called and an officer arrived the next morning.
Gina King said: “After quite some time he managed to cut the netting and push the bird free with a pole and it fell straight to the pavement below with a thud. Amazingly it was frazzled but still alive.”
Bird fouling has become a real problem in the town centre and many shops have installed the netting as a deterrent. This incident occurred a few feet away from the corpse of another pigeon that became trapped in similar circumstances.
A spokesperson for HSBC said: “The netting was erected above our branch after work to the Minster scared them all over to here and Boots next door.
“We put the anti-pigeon netting up purely because pigeon droppings are a serious health risk and it does not contravene any regulations.
“At the time the manager was made aware of the bird becoming entangled “The netting is vital to protect the safety of our customers and staff.
