Postman is hailed a hero after barn rescue

Published: April 19, 2007

A STRABANE postman has been hailed as a hero after freeing cattle from a blazing barn on Monday.

The owner of the barn, William Buchanan, personally thanked postman Davy McFeeters on Tuesday for his help after a fire broke out at the barn at Lowertown Road in Ballymagorry.

The barn, which housed cattle, at Lowertown Road went on fire on Monday morning sometime after 10am.

Postman Davy McFeeters had just driven off from the house having delivered mail when he noticed smoke.

“I had already been to the house and had just driven off. As I got further up the road I noticed smoke coming from the barn and I didn’t think it looked like an ordinary fire so I decided to call the Fire Brigade.

“I went back to the house and began to bang on the windows but there was no-one home. I decided to go around to the barn and have a look.

“I could hear the cattle in the barn, they were very panicked. I tried to pull the gates forward but there were silage bales in front of them.

“There was a young lad there and he came to help me. There were some 20-30 cows and they were panicking so we managed to let them out.

“The brother of the man who owns the barn then arrived on the scene and we tried to get the tractors out of the barn. Unfortunately two of the tractors were burnt out but one was salvaged.”

Having played his part, Davy then went on about his deliveries in the Ballymagorry area.

“I went on ahead about my deliveries then smelling of soot and smoke,” he laughs.

It was his call to the home of a local woman after the fire that has Davy regarded as a hero.

Michelle Graham, contacted the Chronicle on Tuesday.

She spoke with Davy on Monday after seeing the fire engines on the road.

“Two fire engines had passed on the road and shortly after that our postman Davy called so I went out to him to ask if he knew what was going on so he told me the story.

“He was a bit shaken but I just think he’s a real hero. He was very brave to tackle it to get the cattle out of the barn.

“I just think he was incredibly brave. He’s a great postman, he just keeps an eye out for everyone.”
