Mom thanks hero boy for saving daughter

Dhanashree Govender has sent her heartfelt thanks to a Grade 7 pupil who risked his life to save her daughter.
Hegeshnie Govender, a pupil at Longcroft Primary, in Phoenix, was on her way home from school when she stopped on the barrier line while the road cleared at a busy intersection
A classmate, Mahendran Michael, who was also waiting to cross over, saw a bakkie heading towards her and ran across the road to try to push her out of the way. Both children were hit by the bakkie and injured.
Speaking to the Daily News on Tuesday, Govender said she was more than grateful that Michael tried to saved her daughter.
“It could have been worse. I want to thank him for helping her,” she said. Hegeshnie is currently recovering in Addington Hospital.
Her injuries could have been worse if her classmate hadn’t come to her rescue.
Michael is being hailed a hero in the community after word of his selfless actions got out.
Hegeshnie, speaking from her hospital bed, said she could not remember anything about the accident except rolling on the ground and hearing her brother scream.
“We were walking home together and I was crossing the road. It was busy.
“I didn’t see the bakkie coming towards me. I just remember being knocked,” she said.
“I don’t even remember Mahendran pushing me out of the way.”
Govender sat next to her daughter trying to comfort her as she flinched every time she moved in the bed.
“She has been in lots of pain ever since the accident. They have put pins in her leg to try and set the bone which broke.
“She’s now under observation and doctors are doing regular x-rays to monitor her progress,” she said.
