Hero Terry gets a bravery award

BUXTON hero Terry Fowler has been presented with a certificate for bravery after rescuing a drowning man during a family holiday in North Yorkshire.
Terry, of Harpur Hill, plunged into the icy depths of the River Ouse in York and dragged the 35-year-old man to safety.
In recognition of his bravery, Terry, 41, who is a shift manager at Federal Mogul in Chapel-en-le-Frith, was awarded a commendation by Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust.
Presenting him with his certificate, Mayor of the High Peak, Cllr Derek Udale, said: “I am very proud of him. He put his own life at risk to save somebody else.
“To jump into the icy water, battle against the river’s strong current and then drag the man to the riverbank was such a brave thing to do.”
The dramatic rescue took place in February last year when Terry, his wife and two sons were enjoying a three-day, half-term break in the medieval city. Recalling the events of that day, Terry said: “I had been out running and noticed a crowd of people on the riverbank all pointing to a man in the river. I quickly moved to the front, took my shoes off and jumped in, then swam out and grabbed hold of him.
“The river’s current was strong and the bloke weighed about five stone more than me, but I managed to pull him back to the side.”
He added: “It was just a spur of the moment reaction. In situations like that you don’t have time to think; you either react or you don’t.”
