Teachers donate to Locks of Love

Published: April 13, 2007

Laura Holtkamp and Kelley Coldiron, both fifth-grade teachers at Loveland Intermediate School, recently donated their hair to Locks of Love.

On Jan. 4, 2006, Holtkamp received news that one of her students had leukemia. On that day she decided not to cut her hair for a year. Her hair grew and grew and finally, on Feb. 16, Holtkamp donated 10 inches of her hair to Locks of Love.

“This particular student and many others have inspired me to be a better person,” Holtkamp said.

I hope that as a teacher I can help many children. In my lifetime, I hope I can help many people by doing good things. It is my hope that my hair brings joy to a child who has lost their hair during cancer treatment.”

One of the things Coldiron has been blessed with is a lot of thick curly hair. Over the years she has heard more times than once that someone would love to have all that hair. After the devastating loss of two Loveland students, she kept trying to think of ways to help the families deal with their loss and keep the memory of the students alive. She felt compelled to continue to grow her hair and donate to someone who was in real need of it.

“These girls have left behind courage for others to do good things in their memory,’ Coldiron said. Coldiron chose to donate her hair, a very small, but rewarding deed.

“I challenge everyone to continue to do good things in their memory; no deed is too big or too small,” Coldiron said.

Cassie Nedeljko, Anny Niemeyer, Lila Butler, Destiny Smith, Sidney Dudley, Erin Werking, Madison Canada, Annalise Tereck, Erin Werking, Anne Lehmann and Sara Sexton have all donated to Locks of Love. Holtkamp and Coldiron are encouraging other students to join in to do the same.

A display in the school office window proudly exhibits the stories and pictures. It won’t be long before the sign-up sheet is full of names of volunteers committed to doing the same. Kindness and generosity are contagious.
