Charity delivers new homes to Wilma victims

Published: April 13, 2007

Nearly a year and a half after Hurricane Wilma hit some of the storm’s victims are finally getting the help they need - a new home.

The charity group I-HOPE delivered 14 FEMA trailers for displaced families on Friday and 19 others are still on the way.

“When you drive around Immokalee you can see some pretty deplorable living conditions and some of the houses are damaged, but people are still living in them. Most of them are not planning on rebuilding their homes,” said David Grove, I-HOPE supervisor.

But unlike in other cases, the FEMA trailers are going to be permanent homes - not temporary housing.

I-HOPE bought the trailers from the government and is selling them to the storm’s victims at a low price.

It’s helping dozens of families get back on their feet. Wilma hit in October 2005.

“I had to start all over again and it’s hard for a single parent to do that,” said Christina Flores, Immokalee resident.

Helping families, like the Flores, has become a community wide project in Immokalee. I-HOPE brought in the trailers and high school shop students are making stairs for the homes.
