Blankets destined for precious bundles
Published: April 10, 2007
So grateful is the family of baby Chelsea Anne Mayes for the great care and the special gift she received at Akron Children’s Hospital that members felt moved to give back.
What they settled on — with the help of a posse of willing friends, a Girl Scout troop and members of Medina’s Holy Martyr Catholic Church — were beautiful hand- and machine-made blankets.
Blankets as beautiful as the one on which they found Chelsea in the pediatric intensive care unit — a Project Linus blanket with pink and lavender hearts.
Chelsea, the daughter of Suzanne and Eric Mayes of Medina, was born Dec. 20. She had been rushed to the hospital at 3 weeks old, suffering from adenovirus, and was hospitalized for 2 ½ weeks.
Betty Platner of Medina, one of Chelsea’s proud grandmas, talked about how the “Chelsea Cares” blanket project mushroomed, drawing participants as old as their late 70s to as young as a girl of 4.
“Most of the blankets are fleece that were hand tied,” Platner said. “Others were knitted, crocheted and quilted.”
The final count? Two hundred blankets, which will be presented next week to the hospital.
“Our family (including other grandmother Sue Mayes of Medina) and church plan to make this an annual Lenten project.”
In the meantime, baby Chelsea is recovering at home, enjoying her special blanket.
