Fallen owl returned to nest

A baby great horned owl was returned to its nest at Evergreen Cemetery today after falling nearly 60-feet on a recent windy day, authorities said.
The baby, one of two in a tree on the cemetery’s west side, was found Monday on the ground. Wildlife of Wisconsin took in the owl overnight before the bird was returned to the nest at about 10 a.m. today, Manitowoc Firefighter Brad Olivera said.
The fire department volunteered its ladder truck to put the baby bird back. The mother owl, flew away as the ladder approached the nest, and watched from a nearby tree, Olivera said.
“The baby owls didn’t appear scared at all,” Olivera said.
Olivera and Susan Theys from Wildlife of Wisconsin returned the owl to its nest. The owl was wrapped in a blanket as Olivera and Theys were raised to the nest.
“This is the first time I had to put an owl back in its nest,” said Olivera, a 4-year veteran of the fire department. “It’s unusual.”
The baby owl is about 18 inches tall. Its mother has a wingspan of about 4 feet, Olivera said.
