Miracle mum survives …

Published: April 5, 2007

DICKENS Heath mother Lisa Abercrombie has more reasons than one to think someone is watching over her.

Because not only did her instincts save her life, but also that of her son.

The mum of three was due to give birth on January 23. “I had had a fantastic pregnancy,” said the 41-year-old, “but on Boxing Day night I went to bed and woke up in the early hours just a few pains, nothing bad, but something told me I needed to go to hospital.”

The part-time receptionist arrived and was told she needed an emergency caesarean as the babies heartbeat was rock bottom. Little Oscar James Gabriel was born, but wasn’t breathing. He was resuscitated and taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Heartlands.

However, all was not well with Lisa who had lost five litres of blood as a result of a ruptured placenta and needed emergency surgery. She was then sedated for 12 hours.

“If I hadn’t got there within another hour we both would have died,” she said.

Meanwhile little Oscar was not doing well, and was suffering from kidney failure, liver failure, a weak heart and lungs, shallow breathing and had begun fitting.

When Lisa woke she was rushed by ambulance to be with her son. “I was still in shock, it was just awful. They said to us it would be a miracle if he lived,” she said.

The family were braced for the worst and told that if he did

survive at the least he would be severely brain damaged, and mentally and physically handicapped. However, steadily he began to recover and now 12 weeks later is fighting fit. To top it off, an MRI scan has revealed he may have sustained slight brain damage, but it is likely to affect just his co-ordination.

Lisa and husband Andy, a 41-year-old software company director, said they were so grateful to all medical staff at both Heartlands and Solihull hospitals.

“”It took me a while to get my head round but I just think somebody was smiling down on us and we are the luckiest family ever,” she added.
