Man Called a Hero for Saving Boy’s Life

Published: April 5, 2007

People are calling a Santa Maria businessman a hero for saving the life of a young boy.

We begin with the facts first.

* A Nipomo mother drove her car in reverse, accidentally trapping her son underneath.
* It happened on Thursday, March 15, in the 3000 block of Skyway Drive in Santa Maria.
* Tonight, 4-year-old Javier Vargas remains in serious condition at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

He suffered a broken arm and a fractured skull.

But he may not be alive today if a Santa Maria man did not come to the rescue.

There are still blood stains left behind from Thursday’s tragic accident.

“I just saw a lady out there screaming basically around her car and I didn’t know what was going on, so I ran out to see what was going on,” said Matt Hester, a Santa Maria businessman.

The parking space is empty now, but Olga Vargas drove her car in reverse believing her 4-year-old son, Javier, was with her.

Instead, he was trapped underneath her car fighting for his life.

“He was crying and there was some blood on him and stuff and my first reaction was just to get him out of there. Get the car off him,” said Hester.

So Matt Hester ran into his pressure washer shop and used a floor jack hoping to lift the car and help the boy escape from underneath.

“He looked like he was kinda twisted up in there you know, he didn’t look good,” said Hester.

But Hester’s plan worked with help from another man who crawled in to get the boy out.

Now, he is being called a hero for his actions.

A title he said will take some time getting used to.

“I would have done that for anybody you know cause just looking at a kid stuck under a car like that, anybody would have done the same thing,” said Hester.

“She is a wonderful mother. She would do anything for her kids. And right now, she’s just devastated which is understandable and we all feel for her,” said Nina Almaguer, a family friend.
