Hero boy averts collision disaster

Published: April 5, 2007

Nursing a few scrapes and bruises is a small price to pay as Mahendran Michael starts his school holidays. He is being hailed a hero for risking his life to push a school friend out of the way of an oncoming van.

Among his admirers is his mother, Reema, who on Thursday thanked God for the lucky escape of the two Durban children.

The Phoenix mother gazed lovingly at her son as he relived Wednesday afternoon, when he and a friend were knocked down by a bakkie just a few metres away from his home.

Mahendran, 13 and his classmate Hegeshnie Govender, from Longcroft Primary school in Phoenix, were on their way home at about 2.30pm when they were knocked down in Longbury Drive.

“I was just about to cross the road when I saw Hegeshnie standing on the middle line in the road waiting to cross over. A taxi had stopped on the side of the road to pick up and drop off passengers. When I looked again I saw the van coming towards her,” said Mahendran.

“I ran towards her and tried pushing her out of the way. I think she was in shock because she just stood there. The next thing I recall is being struck by the side of the van and falling to the ground.”

Paramedics at the scene stabilised both children. Hegeshnie sustained injuries to her left leg and Mahendran sustained fractures to his left hand.
