Meet Rocky, the miracle cat

Published: April 4, 2007

Rocky is one of 10 cats, three dogs and two fish who share our address (all neutered or spayed), but he is the undisputed favorite of my husband and I.

Rocky’s mother was a stray who chose to have her litter in my mother-in-law’s garage. When my husband discovered them, the mother cat had died of unknown causes and the kittens were less than 3 weeks old. By the next day, all but one of the kittens was dead. We were able to keep the kitten alive by bottle-feeding him every two hours, just as you would a newborn. He became our baby from then on, and since he was able to overcome all the odds, we named him Rocky.

Until he was a year old, Rocky was my constant companion — sleeping with us at night and traveling where ever we went. Even though he loved to play in the yard all day, Rocky was always nearby when I called him to come in at night. Then one night, he didn’t show up. We lived on a lake in North Alabama at that time, and I spent the next few days combing the shore and woods for any sign of him but to no avail, I gave up. A week after his disappearance, Rocky showed up covered in the most foul smelling “mud” and raw paws. He actually let me give him a bath, and I found out later he had been trapped in an abandoned septic tank with a broken lid where there had been a camping trailer some years earlier. We were just so grateful for miracle No. 2, and life was good again for Rocky, who sure lived up to his name.

Six years passed, and we moved to Cantonment in June 2006. Rocky, along with all the other pets, made the move with us and all seemed to adjust well to our new home. About two months after the move, Rocky disappeared again. After a few days of searching and going to the shelter, we tacked up “lost cat” posters on every road in the neighborhood and offered a reward. People would call with sightings, and we would go check them out, but three months passed, and I lapsed into a depression from not knowing what happened to our Rocky.

There was a hole in my heart that no other pet could fill.

My husband and I finally gave up hope of ever seeing Rocky again on this earth. One of our other pets is a Pomeranian named Mienikie who is the same age as Rocky, and they were great friends. As we were getting ready for bed one night, my husband went to let Mienikie out as usual. When he opened the door to the screened porch, in walked Rocky as if he had never been gone. I fell to my knees and thanked God for this one more miracle. We could not believe we were seeing our beloved Rocky and feeling his soft coat and hearing his melodious purr again. The next day, the vet said Rocky had only lost 2 pounds but seemed in good health. As an extra precaution, we had Rocky injected with an ID chip — in case another miracle is ever needed.

I’ve always heard that a “miracle” is only a miracle if you perceive it as such. This cat is living proof that miracles still happen.

Thanks to all the wonderful concerned neighbors and well- wishers who tried to help us bring Rocky home.
