Baywatch heroes: teenagers rescue surfer

Published: April 2, 2007

TWO Bulli teenagers are being hailed heroes after rescuing an unconscious surfer from the waves on Saturday morning.

Taylor Gosling, 18, and mate Kyran Della Vedova, 17, yesterday told how they stripped down to their undies “Baywatch-style” and swam about 40m off Bulli Beach to a man floating face down in the water.

“We were riding our bikes on the way to watch soccer at Woonona’s Ocean Park when this bloke ran up to us asking if we had a mobile phone because there was someone floating face down in the water,” Mr Gosling said. “We dropped our bikes, got our gear off Baywatch-style and went straight out to the body.”

Mr Gosling has been a Bulli Surf Club member for about 13 years and also has his bronze medallion. At weekends he volunteers as a lifesaver, but admitted he never thought he would have to put into practice all the techniques he had learned over the years.

“When we got out to him we rolled him over … he was foaming at the mouth,” Mr Gosling said.
