Toddler rescued from flipped utility vehicle

Published: March 28, 2007

A 4-year-old was trapped under water for 10 minutes tonight after the utility vehicle her mother was driving flipped into a pond on their property.

The woman was driving a John Deere six-wheeled “Gator” on a narrow path around the pond with four children when it tipped over about 6:30 p.m. into the pond, according to Geauga County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Scott Hildenbrand.

Two of her 4-year-old children were in car seats strapped to the bed of the vehicle. She freed one of the children, but could not lift the vehicle off the other.

When rescue workers arrived, the girl was unconscious and unresponsive, Hildenbrand said. Emergency workers started the child’s heart beating before she was taken to LakeEast Hospital in Painesville. She was flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center.

Her condition was unavailable tonight.

The other 4-year-old was taken to LakeEast Hospital for treatment.

The other two children were unhurt.

Fire departments from Perry and LeRoy, Hambden and Concord townships responded.
