Money pouring in for miracle mum

Published: March 27, 2007

CASH continues to roll in for a miracle mum who survived a giant aneurysm – and it’s hoped thousands more will be raised tonight.

Christine Collins had a massive brain haemorrhage due to the abnormally large blood vessel.

Specialists at Newcastle General found she’d had a grade-five haemorrhage – the most serious kind – and gave her little hope of survival.

But the plucky 44-year-old mum-of-two, of Whiteleas, South Shields, astounded her family and doctors by battling back to health.

Mrs Collins’s family are now raising money for Newcastle Health Care Trust as a ‘thank you’ for saving her life.

Events and raffles have already seen hundreds of pounds come in for the high dependency unit (HDU) at Newcastle General where Mrs Collins stayed.

The family hope to raise thousands more at a sell-out fundraising night at Whiteleas Social Club in South Shields tonight.

Mrs Collins, husband Barry and their children Bethany and Lee will all be attending.

Her sister Julie Cunningham said: “It should be an excellent night. We have a disco, a singer and an excellent raffle – I don’t think anything is worth less than £10.

“There’s friends, family, colleagues, friends’ friends and 13 people are coming from the HDU.

“I’m sure it will be quite an emotional night, and we hope to raise about £3,000. It’s been hard work, but it will all be worth it.”

A family friend will be reading a poem about Mrs Collins’s plight.

At the last event – a race night with a pie and pea supper at the White Horse in South Shields – the family kept the money coming.
Thanks

Mrs Cunningham said: “The bar was packed, and we raised £1,030.”

The family would like to thank Tony and Pauline Bush from the White Horse; Paul Robinson from PR Plumbing; Keith Simons of Leighton Builders; C&W Electrical Contractors for their sponsorship; staff from Harton Technology College – who worked with Mrs Collins as learning support assistants – and Mr and Mrs Bush for their support.

“Special thanks go to Tony Gelder of Gelder Pies for supplying the pies,” added Mrs Cunningham.
