Baby rescued during flats blaze

Published: March 27, 2007

Three people, including a one-year-old child, have been rescued from a fire in County Antrim.

The blaze, in a ground-floor flat at Eglinton Street, Portrush, was reported to the Fire and Rescue Service at about 2300 GMT on Friday.

A man was rescued from the ground floor and officers wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman and the baby from a first-floor flat.

It is thought the fire started in a grill pan. No-one was hospitalised.

A spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Service said the fire alarm system had prevented serious consequences.

“Again the life-saving benefits of using a smoke detector have been made clear,” he said.

“At this incident in Portrush, the early actuation of the smoke alarm alerted the occupants to the danger they faced.

“(It) also allowed the Fire and Rescue Service to be summoned quickly to prevent the spread of fire and perform the rescues with relative ease.”
