Boy rescued from pool

Published: March 26, 2007

A one-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after he fell into a swimming pool at his home in Pretoria, paramedics said yesterday.

Netcare 911 spokesman Nick Dollman said paramedics were called to the scene after his parents found their son floating in their Faerie Glen pool on Saturday afternoon.

“His parents pulled him from the pool and initiated CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The child’s face had apparently already turned blue,” he said.

Following the CPR conducted by parents, the child began breathing by himself.

“The child was in a serious condition.

“ He was semi-conscious and was attended to by an advanced life-support paramedic, then transported by a Netcare 911 ambulance to the Pretoria East hospital,” said Dollman.

The one-year-old was later airlifted to the Netcare Garden City Clinic.

Dollman urged parents and child minders to take first-aid training courses, explaining that a lack of oxygen to the brain could lead to brain damage within minutes.

“A lack of oxygen to the brain for a period of four minutes can lead to permanent brain damage or death,” he said.
