Scientists rescue entangled whale

Published: March 23, 2007

Scientists rescued a humpback whale off the coast of Virginia Beach today.

The 30-foot-long whale was entangled in a commercial fishing net.

Crews worked for hours to lift the 7-ton whale with special buoys. They then used special tools to cut the ropes.

What made the rescue special was the fact that the stuck whale was one the scientists had studied in the past.

Susan Barco of the Virginia Marine Science Center said, “It’s a good feeling. It’s a very good feeling and knowing the whale and knowing a lot of people have seen that whale this year is very good, and we hope we see it in the future. That’s what’s really neat.”

Rescuers are trying to identify the owner of the fishing net so they can better understand how the whale became entangled.
