A real-life hero among our youth

Published: March 22, 2007

Sometimes in reading our daily newspapers, we so often read about our young men and women getting into trouble, and people making remarks about our youth today.

A week ago, a friend of mine had food poisoning and was taken to Community Memorial Hospital for observation and treatment. After she got home, she felt like vomiting again, but this time her tongue got stuck in the back of her throat, and she was gasping for air. One of her sons was home at the time and came in and quickly administered the Heimlich maneuver on her a few times until her air passage was cleared.

This young man learned this skill, along with many other live-saving techniques in basic training for the Army last summer. He is finishing up his senior year at Winona Senior High School and has gotten through a lot of adversity that could have hindered his education but has never given up. He will rejoin Army intelligence after graduation.

I just want to say a special thank you to Phillip Dontje for saving my friend’s, his mother Kathryn’s, life. We all need to focus sometimes on the good some of these young teenagers do in this community. I just wanted to have Phillip recognized because of his quick thinking and action. Thanks again to a wonderful son and soldier. We certainly need more like him in this world.
