Granny, grandson rescued from fire

Published: March 20, 2007

A GRANDMOTHER remains warded at San Fernando General Hospital yesterday after being badly burnt after fire destroyed her Lengua Village house, police said. Villagers had to rescue Brenda Lendore’s four-year-old grandson from the burning house, after fire broke out during the early morning hours.

Lendore, 78, was asleep at the time with her grandson Akeem Saunders in the wooden house at Indian Walk, Lengua Village. Her two daughters, who are both security guards, were at their respective workplaces at the time.

According to police, at about 2.45 am, a fire started in the bedroom where Lendore and Saunders were asleep. Investigators believe a lighted kerosene lamp which was knocked over caused curtains in the bedroom to be ignited.

Lendore told police she tried in vain to put out the fire by using a piece of cloth in an effort to smother the flames on the curtain. Realising this was in vain, she started screaming for help.

Neighbours told Newsday when they heard the woman’s screams they rushed out of their homes and went to Lendore’s assistance. The elderly woman and her grandson were quickly pulled out of the burning house. A report was made to the police but although several Fire tenders arrived soon, the firemen were unable to save the two-bedroom house.

Lendore, who was badly burnt while trying to put out the fire, was taken to the Princes Town Medical Centre where she was treated and transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital where she remains warded.

The house which was not wired for electricity was valued at $50,000. Investigations are continuing.
