Dog Rescued After Falling Off 350-Foot Cliff
Published: March 16, 2007
Firefighters from the North County Fire Authority rescued a dog Saturday after it fell down a 350-foot cliff along Mori Point in Pacifica, the fire authority reported today.
A woman had been hiking along the top of the cliff with her Whippet/Great Dane mix when the animal, who was not on a leash, strayed too close to the edge and fell, landing on the rocky beach below, the fire authority reported.
Firefighters arrived to help at about 11:39 a.m. and two firefighters repelled down the side of the cliff to reach the dog.
A concerned citizen had already hiked down the to the dog when firefighters arrived and gave rescue workers information about the dog’s condition.
A third firefighter repelled down to hike back up the cliff with the citizen.
Once they reached the dog, which was still conscious, firefighters stabilized it on a backboard device and rescue workers above lifted it to safety.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals assisted with medical care as soon as the dog reached the top of the cliff. The dog was then transported to Linda Mar Veterinary Hospital for further stabilization before being taken to a local emergency veterinary hospital for treatment, the fire authority reported.
Pet owners are urged to keep their animals on leashes when walking along steep or fragile cliff edges. Weather conditions and land erosion can make cliffs unpredictable and people should take precautions to keep their pets safe.
