Workers rescue girl, 5, pinned beneath a bus

Published: March 15, 2007

It’s amazing what determined people can do in a matter of seconds.

When a collision Tuesday in Keller left a 5-year-old girl pinned under a bus, construction workers rushed to help the victims.

David Eastep said he was working when he saw his fellow construction workers run toward the accident.

“Me and my buddy right here took off running to see what had happened and to see if anyone was hurt,” Mr. Eastep said. “That was when we saw the little girl out the back window, and the bus was on top of her.”

Another worker, Frank Underwood, said several men immediately ran to the bus and teamed up to lift it off the girl.

“It was just amazing to me what people can do just in a split second,” Mr. Underwood said.

Keller police said a car ran a red light about 11:40 a.m. near Wall Price Road and U.S. Highway 377. The vehicle slammed into a Primrose School bus, causing it to roll over.

Several of the children were injured, as was the driver of the car that hit the bus.

Some believe the construction workers’ efforts helped save the girl’s life.

Mr. Underwood said that when the bus was turned upright, “it wanted to yank her from out of my arms, but I still had a hold of her. And I reached up and untangled her feet and everything and carried her over to the sidewalk.”

He said he became attached to the girl the second he scooped her up after his co-workers moved the bus.

The young girl was unconscious for a few minutes, Mr. Underwood said, but quickly came to.

“I asked her what her name was, and her name is Emily, and she is in the first grade,” he said.

Authorities hadn’t released the girl’s name, and her condition was unknown. The children were taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center.

The men said they were happy to see the 5-year-old and the other children talking as they were taken to be treated.

“It was just a miracle she lived through it,” Mr. Underwood said.
