Dog Alerts Woman To Burning Home

A Lake County woman said her dog saved her life after a space heater sparked a fire early Tuesday morning at her home on Hibiscus Avenue in Paisley.
The woman said she only woke up to the smoke, because of a dog with an appropriate name.
“They say a dog is a man’s best friend. In this case, it’s a woman’s best friend. She’s my best friend,” Jamie Gray said.
Jamie and her black Labrador, named Smokey, have been through a lot together. They survived a fire that destroyed her double-wide mobile home and practically everything in it.
“Flames were coming out the door. The door was off the hinges, the roof falling in pieces,” she said.
Had it not been for Smokey, Jamie said, she would have slept through it, but at around 3:30 Tuesday morning, Smokey wouldn’t stop barking. Gray woke up to a trailer full of thick black smoke.
“I grabbed Smokey’s tail and out the door we went, as quickly as we could,” she said.
Everything she owned is either destroyed or severely damaged. She blames a space heater she purchased last August. She thinks it was knocked over accidentally before she went to bed Monday night and now she’s left with only memories and the most difficult challenge of starting over.
“Where are you supposed to start when you lose everything? My purse, wallet, checkbook, everything is gone. Where do you start?” she said.
Both Jamie and Smokey were able to escape the fire without and injuries. Jamie said she has family to stay with for now and the Red Cross is also offering assistance.
