Dog learns how to take out cash from an ATM
Published: March 14, 2007
Renae, a dog trained to help the disabled, has amazed his owner by mastering a particularly tricky task - to withdraw cash from an ATM or cashpoint, using her teeth.
Margie Woodward, the dog’s owner, has cerebral palsy, works for a charity for the disabled and has a busy life - but she finds some everyday tasks tricky, which is where Renae comes in. This four-and-a half year old labrador is no pet - she’s been trained to perform more than 100 household tasks.
Renae was trained by a charity called Canine Partners, a charity organization based in England which trains up to 30 assistance dogs every year.
Canine Partners could save the government a lot of money in saved social services bills. A dog can reduce a disabled person’s costs from around £1 000 (about R14 000) a week to just £250 (about R3 500) - that’s a sum of £80 000 (about R1.13 million) over a dog’s working life.
Renae’s skill at the cashpoint is very useful but Margie still needs to remember her PIN number.
