Bravery honour for hero milkman

Published: March 14, 2007

A hero milkman who risked his life to save a disabled war veteran from a fire is to receive a national award.

Gary Cant ran into the burning house near Hexham in Northumberland, where the 86-year-old was trapped upstairs, and carried him to safety.

Mr Cant took just five minutes out of his round to rescue the pensioner in November 2006.

The Dairy Farmers of Britain will present him with their National Hero Award on Thursday.

Mr Cant was working in the village of Wall in the early hours when he noticed smoke pouring from the house.

After running inside to find the man trapped upstairs, he lifted the pensioner out of his wheelchair and carried him outside.

On Wednesday, Mr Cant said he had not spoken to the fire brigade at the scene and had returned to his round minutes later

He said: “Once I got him out, we put him into a neighbour’s house. He’s living in rented accommodation while his home is repaired, but I saw him yesterday and he’s fine.

“I didn’t really think about it at the time. I just did what I suppose most milkmen would do.

“It just shows that we’re there, and if there are any problems, we’ll try to help.”
