Stolen Dog Escapes From Thieves

Published: March 13, 2007

Tiggy, a four-year-old Whippet from St Albans who was stolen when her owner’s house was burgled, has been found safe and well in Islington, London after escaping from the thieves that took him.

The burglary, which robbed Mr and Mrs Cottrell of all their homely possessions including dog Tiggy, took place on Tuesday 16th January while Mr and Mrs Cottrell were out at work. Remarkably, Tiggy was found later that same day wandering the streets of Islington, some twenty five miles from home. Police were handed the dog by a member of the public who then took it to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Mr Cottrell said: “We were in shock when we realised Tiggy had been taken. She is a beautiful dog and was no doubt stolen to be sold on. I had contacted the local police and dog wardens in the area to tell them she had been stolen, so it was a huge relief to get a call from the Home and find out she was with them. It’s wonderful to get her back and I’d like to thank the Home for looking after her.”

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home cares for over 12,000 dogs and cats every year, Lucy Reade from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home said:

“Pedigree and good looking dogs are always going to be a target for dog nappers, which is why it’s so important for dog owners to make sure their pets are tagged and micro chipped. Tiggy wasn’t microchipped, so it’s very fortunate that we were able to reunite her.

“We do work closely with local police and dog wardens regarding lost and found dogs within the M25, but if dogs have no contact details via a tag or chip, it’s very hard to reunite them.“
