Dad, son rescue teens from wreck

Two men turned into heroes — although they shun the title — when they ran outside their home and pushed over a car that was on its side to free a 14-year-old girl pinned inside.
Five Noblesville teens were injured in the Friday night crash, but police think their injuries would have been worse were it not for Brent and Dustin Hiday’s actions.
Christina Barr, 17, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt east on 191st Street near Prairie Baptist Road about 10:30 p.m., with two girls and two boys as passengers, when the car went off the south side of 191st Street. Barr tried to correct the situation, but lost control. It went off the north side of 191st Street, said Vicky Dunbar, public information officer for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
The car went through a farm fence, where it flipped over twice then landed on the passenger side.
Brittney Wilson, 16, used a cell phone to call 911 then she and Barr walked to a nearby house to ask for help, Brent Hiday said.
“We were up and heard the doorbell,” said Brent Hiday, who lives at 19101 Prairie Baptist Road. Hiday, 51, and his son, Dustin Hiday, 25, opened the door and saw the two girls standing on their porch.
When the Hidays got to the accident site Lorika Harris, 14, was not moving but was still buckled in her seat belt in the front passenger seat, Hiday said. Part of her was outside the car, and the driver side of the car was above her.
One of the boys was still in the backseat, and the other was sitting on the ground. The two boys were Christopher Gunn, 17, and Scott Balinger, 16, but neither Hiday nor the police are sure which boy was still inside the car.
The Hidays and the boy who had gotten out of the car on his own pushed the car back over onto its wheels and waited for help to arrive.
Harris was flown to Methodist Hospital, Dunbar said, with minor bleeding and a right-arm injury. Brent Hiday said Harris’ parents called and told his wife the injuries were more serious. She was listed Monday afternoon in fair condition.
“We’re keeping her in our prayers,” Brent Hiday said.
Gunn and Balinger were taken by ambulance to Community Hospital in Anderson with minor injuries, Dunbar said. The hospital said they were treated and released.
Barr, the driver, was flown to Wishard Hospital with shoulder, knee and hand injuries. A hospital spokesperson said Wishard does not release conditions of patients who are juveniles.
Wilson was taken to Riverview Hospital for shoulder and back pain.
Dunbar said all five teens were wearing their seat belts.
“If they hadn’t been, some if not all of the passengers may have been ejected,” she said.
As for the two men who helped the injured teens, Brent Hiday said he and his son were just trying to help in a bad situation.
