Snowball the Cat Rescued From Utility Pole
Published: March 12, 2007
What is firefighting folklore for most firefighters turned into an actual rescue for a couple of Prince George’s County firefighters.
Yes, they rescued a cat.
Snowball made her way up a utility pole in the 8600 block of Ridgevale Avenue Thursday afternoon to escape an aggressive dog that had given chase.
She made her way up on top of cable wires that were located just 2 feet below high voltage lines, according to a Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department news release.
The wrong move for Snowball could have been deadly.
Firefighters Todd Szelkowsky and Kevin Hodges went up for the rescue on-board Tower 21, Oxon Hill Fire/EMS Station 21.
Firefighter Matt Miller maneuvered the extended “bucket” close enough for the two firefighters on-board to reach out to “Snowball,” the release says.
Yes, Snowball cooperated and was brought safely to the the ground as a cheering crowd watched.
“This was a difficult decision to make in attempting this rescue, however, we took the time to identify all the power lines, established ground rules and implemented all safety precautions to avoid injury to our personnel,” said Battalion Chief Rudy Thomas, in the release.
“If we were not 100 percent positive about avoiding injury to firefighters, we would not have attempted this rescue, fortunately, everything went as planned and we were able to help members of our community.”
Rescuers say it appears Snowball used two of her nine lives scrambling away from the dog and up the pole.
