Rescue team called out to save dog

Published: March 9, 2007

When Martin Baird woke on Tuesday last week, Sami, one of two family dogs was missing. The back door was open.

“We looked for the dog everywhere but couldn’t find him,” Baird’s wife, Catherine, said at her Ste. Anne de Bellevue home that she shares with her husband, daughters Macy, 9 and Chelsey, 4, and the two dogs.

While the family was searching streets, Sami was spotted out on the ice on Lac St. Louis.

Montreal fire department was called and the ice-rescue unit was dispatched to get the dog. After at first backing away from the firefighters, Sami went to them.

SPCA officials picked up the dog and took him to their shelter on Jean Talon St. in Montreal. Catherine Baird learned what had happened from Ste. Anne de Bellevue municipality.

Martin said he was surprised the dog went to the lake. “He doesn’t like the water at all,” he said.
