Good samaritan hailed hero from fallen woman

Published: March 8, 2007

Diane Green wanted to water her flowers. “I think I tripped over this here,” she said. Tripped, and fell through plexiglas covering down to a cement landing and steps below– a 14-foot drop.

“The next thing I knew I was just laying there banging saying help,” Green said..”I don’t even know how long I did that.” With multiple fractures to her pelvis, she couldn’t do much more.

Fred Williams lives a few doors down on another street. He was inside when he heard a cry. “I thought I heard a cat meow,” he said. “About ten minutes later I thought I heard it say help me instead of meow.”

He ran outside to listen more. “I kept saying where you at where you at and then I figured out where she was at.”

But Fred never did see her. It was nearly midnight and too dark to see in front of him. He called police, it was the only words Diane still remembers. “I remember clearly hearing Mr. Williams’ voice saying I’m calling 911, ” she said.

“I called 911 and help is on the way,” said Williams.

Help came, but it’s Fred Diane says is her guardian angel. “The first thing I thought was thank God, thank God somebody heard me,” she said. “I was just so exhausted and ready to give up.”

Fred’s wife says God played a part, Fred has a hard time hearing but several doors and a street away. He heard Diane’s cry for help when no one else did.

“In these times people don’t go out of their way to help each other that much especially that late at night, 11ish, when you don’t know what you’re going to encounter,” she said. “That he made the effort to find out what was wrong, say a lot about his character.”
