Cutting the cost of feeding families

Published: March 8, 2007

A Lapeer County church held its first food distribution program and hundreds showed up to bring home the bacon.
Nearly 500 people lined up outside the Christian Family Church in Lapeer with cardboard boxes and laundry baskets in tote. Some came from as far as Port Huron.

In assembly line style, people picked up items like hamburger steaks, chicken, steak fries and lasagna dinners — all for $25.

“I was impressed,” said Peggy Silvers, who purchased a food box.

Silvers is a grandmother who says she understands how saving money can make all the difference during tough economic times. “It’s a relief. In fact, we’ve been thinking of shutting our telephone off.”

“This community has been hard hit economically,” said organizer Anita King. “We just wanted to bless the community. This is really going to stretch their dollar.”

About 50 volunteers joined King to help organize the first Angel Food Ministries, which will be a monthly event.

Anyone can place an order in advance and organizers say meats like T-bone steaks can also be purchased for nearly half of what you’d pay at the grocery store.

Chuck Olson also purchased a food box. “We just think it’s something that’s exceptional,” he said. “They’re able to get some value for their money and you get some stability because you can plan what you can buy for next month.”

The Angel Food Ministries will be a monthly event at the Christian Family Church in Lapeer.
