Baby rescued from England’s biggest mountain

Published: March 6, 2007

A 14-month-old baby boy became the youngest person ever to be rescued from a mountain in England after a 42-strong team from a number of rescue squads were sent to aid a lost family.

Although the David and Sally Naylor were both experienced climbers, their family took a wrong turn on the way down from the summit and became lost.

After a 10-hour search in darkness, they were found wet, cold and exhausted, although the baby, strapped to dad’s back in a waterproof papoose, was completely unharmed.

Richard Warren, chairman of the Wasdale team - one of those involved in the mission - told the Evening Standard: “Although tired and wet, the family were well-equipped and out of the wind and driving rain. Conditions on the mountain were severe with low cloud, visibility down to 30 feet, strong winds and driving rain.

“They were a relatively experienced family of walkers, well-equipped. But they set off too late in the day because they left at midday - not enough time to get up and down by nightfall,” he added.

Mr Wasdale also said that the family were safely off the mountain by 03:30GMT and were supplied food, drink and accommodation by the owners of the nearby Wasdale Head Inn.

Dad David told the Telegraph: “We are upset but very grateful for everything the rescue team did to help us.”
