Potty pup rescued by the fire brigade
Published: March 5, 2007
IT was certainly a “ruff” day for Scarlett the Husky after the curious pup went “potty” for a planter sparking an emergency call out from Hampshire Fire Service.
The 17-month old Siberian Husky had been playing with a pebble in her owner’s back garden in Church Road in Locks Heath when the canny canine managed to drop her rock into the terracotta pot.
Not to be outdone by some pottery though, little Scarlett decided to play her own game of fetch only to discover that sometimes when you push your head into something, it does not always come out quite as easily as it went in.
Worried owner Nikki McNally spotted stuck Scarlett just seconds later, but after rushing out to try and free her pet the 45-year-old mum-of-three realised she was well and truly stuck and decided professional help was needed.
Careful Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s specialist animal rescuers from their Rural Safety Team arrived just minutes later and after a quick assessment and some careful tapping, managed to crack open the pot and free the pooch.
A relieved Nikki, who said it was not the first time her pet had got itself into difficulties, said: “I was just inside the house tidying up while she was in the garden digging big holes in the lawn as usual. The next thing I knew she was just lying there with this big pot on her head. She’s such a cheeky, inquisitive dog - she’s always getting into trouble. But it might be the last time she plays with the stones around the pond.” Animal Rescue Specialist Anton Phillips said that removing the pot was a bit like “cracking an egg”.
He added: “Scarlett chased the stone into the pot, and rammed her head in afterwards to try and get it out, but clearly didn’t realise the pot only works one way.
“It’s certainly one of the more unusual rescues we have had to do, but Scarlett is a lovely playful little dog and it was very satisfying to get her out so quickly and with the minimum of fuss.
“She just went straight back to playing seconds after she was freed.”
