Paraglider rescued after three days in a tree
Published: March 5, 2007
An Italian paraglider was rescued safely on Sunday after hanging upside down for three days trapped high in branches in the depths of a forest, emergency services personnel said.
The man had not been seen since last Thursday when he disappeared in Vallombrosa forest, about 40km from Florence. Heavy fog hindered search parties.
“We found him this morning (Sunday) in a tree with the ropes of his paraglider caught in the branches,” said an emergency services officer. “He was hanging down head-first, suspended about ten metres above the ground.”
It took rescuers three hours to dislodge the paraglider, who had suffered no serious injuries.
“On the whole he’s quite calm, but sometimes he gets confused and starts saying crazy things, as though he didn’t realise what kind of a situation he’d got himself into,” one rescuer was quoted as saying.
