Girl, 3, rescued after wandering onto freeway ramp

Published: March 2, 2007

A toddler who wandered onto a freeway on-ramp in the middle of the night was rescued by a motorist who drove the child to a safe location and called authorities.

The 3-year-old girl apparently slipped away from her family’s apartment when she tried to follow her mother to work at 3 a.m. Wednesday, said San Mateo police Lt. Tom Daughtry.

The girl’s father noticed the door wide open and his daughter gone when he awoke shortly after. He flagged down a police car, and San Mateo County police made the connection when a California Highway Patrol officer called to report a toddler found on the freeway.

“There was no negligence,” Daughtry said. “The little girl just had a window of opportunity to walk out of the apartment unnoticed.”

CHP officer Eric Parsons said that even though it is dangerous to stop on a freeway on-ramp, the woman who picked up the lost child acted appropriately.
