Mountain rescue saves baby from snow

Published: February 27, 2007

In a tale sure to warm even the coldest of hearts, a team of mountain rescuers saved an eight-week-old baby’s life after a freak snow storm trapped both mum and tot in their car.

Sudden high winds caught four motorists by surprise in the Upper Wear-dale district of County Durham, as they swept huge snow drifts from the nearby dales onto the roads – causing 3ft piles of snow to fall onto the carriageway.

When it was clear that a young baby was one of those caught in the drifts, quick-thinking team leader Dave Bartles-Smith decided that it would be safer for the baby to be picked out by hand and taken to their nearby Landrover.

“It was dark at the time with mist and a strong wind which was causing the snow to drift,” said Mr Bartles-Smith. “Our team members found a number of vehicles caught out by the conditions. One of the vehicles contained a couple with an eight-week-old baby.

“We decided that the family would be safer if we carried the baby back to our Landrover and took the family to lower ground near Stanhope, where they were left in the hands of the police.”

Both mother and baby were taken to the nearby vehicle, while the remaining nine people caught in the snow waited for local JCBs to come and dig them out.

Happily, both mother and baby are now fine and while police were forced to close the roads over the weekend, it is thought that no-one suffered as a result of the heavy snow.
