14-year-old boy cured of congenital disorder by rare surgery

The doctors at Satguru Pratrap Singh Apollo Hospitals have claimed to successfully operate upon a 14-years-old patient, who suffered from disorder of congenital constipation through rare advanced laparoscopic surgery.
A team of doctors under Dr Arindam Ghosh operated upon Hardeep, a 14-year-old boy from Nawanshar. He could not pass stool satisfactorily, even with laxatives. On investigation and biopsy, he was diagnosed to be suffering from a congenital ailment. “Normally, muscles in the intestine push stool to the anus, where stool leaves the body. Special nerve cells in the intestine make the muscles push. A person with such disease does not have these nerve cells in the last part of the large intestine, so it did not move for evacuation of stool. As a result of which the child is unable to remove fecal matter from his or her body,” Dr Arindam said.
He added that since this is an inborn problem, mostly the disease is identified after conducting tests and if needed, a colon biopsy. “This is a common problem among new-borns in India, with more than 20 to 25 children reporting in hospitals each year. In case of Hardeep the condition was very pathetic as his stool used to seep out occasionally and more laxatives were making him more wet and dirty,” he said.
Conventionally one operation (in two or three stages) is required to remove a part of bowel and to restore continuity, bypassing problematic rectum. However, Dr Arindam Ghosh, Dr Rajan Dhamathia and their team in surgical gastroenterology and advanced laparoscopic digestive surgery unit of SPS Apollo Hospital, undertook a complete key-hole approach in a single stage for Hardeep Singh.
Hardeep has only four one cm puncture points in his abdomen. This reduced the pain, hospital stay and ensured no ugly scars, while at the same time reducing the chance of hernia later. “Very few of such laparoscopic operations had been reported and at least none from India. Hardeep was the second case done,” claimed Dr Ghosh.
