Bus driver rescues toddler

Published: February 26, 2007

A school bus driver starting her regular route rescued a 2-year-old boy who was walking in the middle of the street just southwest of Austin, a school district official said.

Bus driver Tina Johnson saw the toddler — who was in his pajamas and had a pacifier in his mouth — about 6:30 a.m. near 2716 Barton Creek Blvd., stopped the bus and called the sheriff’s office, Austin school district spokeswoman Kathy Anthony said.

Johnson kept the boy with her on the bus until sheriff’s officials arrived, Anthony said.

The toddler wound up walking down the street after he managed to open a door leading outside, the family dog escaped and the boy followed, sheriff’s office spokesman Roger Wade said.

Wade said the boy was unharmed and later returned to his parents, who thought he was asleep.
