Free shop experiment to open all year round
Published: February 23, 2007
A group of Ulverston residents who showed the true meaning of the spirit of Christmas by opening up a free shop are going to continue in business throughout the year.
They were inspired to open the Ulverston Free Shop in the front room of their home because of the spiralling cost of consumerism.
It proved so successful when the group opened up on Market Street they have now decided to open on a monthly basis.
Ulverston charity volunteer Dean Cain teamed up with a group of housemates to run the shop over two weekends.
Mr Cain said they are to continue running the Ulverston Free Shop by popular demand.
He said: “After a fantastic response and generous donations of both recyclable goods and money for charity, we feel the Free Shop would be welcomed as a regular feature in the town.
“There were even a couple of people who commented they could do something similar in their own houses or yards in Dalton and Barrow, which is exactly the kind of independent action we are pleased to inspire!
“Ours began as a bit of an experiment and a practical, positive protest against waste, consumerism and unethical production.
“Now, thanks to everyone who visited us, the South Lakes area has gained itself a valuablefacility.”
The group says it would be difficult to get a more ethical “shopping” experience than one which combines recycling, providing for those on low income and “keeping money out of the pockets of retailers”.
The group is appealing for poems, posters, graffiti style logos, messages, drawings, embroidery and any other type of creative output that can fit on an A4 page so they can turn the walls of the shop into a diverse gallery of local art.
Mr Cain said: “Many thanks again to all who visited over Christmas and in January and we look forward to seeing you on the last Thursday to Saturday of the month.”
Ulverston Free Shop will be open again from February 22 to 24, generally from 11am to 4pm.
Money donated over the festive season was given to charity and until further notice donations will go to United Against Fascism.
