Stranger came to the rescue
Published: February 22, 2007
There are probably moments in every person’s life when the world stands still, everything stops, however briefly; when, for a moment in time, the rules don’t apply.
I know the rules: Everyone is afraid, people care only about themselves, life is too fast, the world is full of cynics, expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed.
On Jan. 23, a man known to me only as “Sergio” stopped time for a moment. He suspended the rules to help my son and my very dear friend. He didn’t know them. He had no reason to put himself in harm’s way.
Many people watched while my son was hit in the face and went down with a bloody, broken nose. They watched my friend try to stop the attacker, to calm him down as he screamed obscenities at my son and tried to climb over her to get to him. I’m sure everyone was terrified. But Sergio alone came to their rescue.
I will never forget this brief moment in time when a human being suspended the rules for a total stranger.
I know that Sergio was hit and may have been badly hurt. Perhaps he is sorry that he made the choice to get involved, but for whatever comfort it may bring him, I hope he knows that there is a mother in this world who considers him a hero.
I can never express fully how grateful I am. He restored in me a belief in the goodness of people that I had nearly lost.
I am truly dumfounded by this selfless act, and I hope his bravery and kindness are a catalyst for others.
On behalf of my son, my friend, and myself, I want to thank Sergio for the moment in time he gave us.
