Prof, family rescue dogs

Published: February 20, 2007

A University professor and his family are asking for student assistance in improving the lives of four dogs with a history of abuse and abandonment.

Last summer, law professor Steve Shi and his family learned of nearly 150 abandoned dogs on a North Georgia property.

After visiting the site and working with several of the dogs, Shi and his wife, Betsy, couldn’t stay away. The dogs, left on their own, had resorted to a “survival of the fittest” mentality and consequently, cannibalism, he said.

“The conditions were so bad - it just overwhelmed us, and so we committed that we would do all we could to help them,” Shi said.

Volunteers worked to transport the dogs to no-kill shelters, homes and sanctuaries for those too aggressive for homes. The Shis took special care in getting medical attention to four particular dogs, but by the time the dogs were released from the vet, the transports were gone.

Shi said he and Betsy made the commitment to care for the dogs themselves because without their support, the dogs had no hope for survival.

Shi said their goal is to rehabilitate and place the dogs with families.

The dogs need as much experience around different people as possible, Shi said.

“We need students who are just willing to come over and love the dogs,” he said.

Several students, including Leslie Horne, have already heeded the call, visiting the dogs and spending time with them.

“I think all dogs are worth our while, but these dogs need some extra help because they had been so neglected,” said Horne, a second-year law student from Virginia.

Shi strongly believes in his family’s efforts and in the impact of volunteers giving time to the dogs.

“I’m no expert, but from the little I know, and my own experience, I don’t think that any dog is really beyond saving if you’re willing to spend the time and give it the care that it needs,” he said.
