Teenage hero rewarded for his life-saving actions

A teenage hero who saved a man’s life after finding him unconscious in the street was this week handed an award in recognition of his actions.
Peter Townsend, 14, of Spa Grove, Lupset was cycling along Snapethorpe Road last August when he discovered Mick Lawson, 47, lying in a pool of blood on the pavement.
Peter immediately leapt off his bike and after checking Mr Lawson over, he tilted his head back and put him in the recovery position.
Mr Lawson had been involved in an incident which left him with a fractured skull and paramedics later credited the teenager’s quick-thinking actions as saving his life.
Peter picked up his first aid skills through a course organised by Newmillerdam Karate Club, which he attends every week.
His chief instructor, Ann Walker, 56, said: “We have a first aid course every year and at the last one I mentioned to the trainer, Glenn Kirby, about what Peter had done.
“I showed him the original article the Express wrote about him in September and he thought it was absolutely brilliant that Peter put his skills to such good use – it is quite something to save a man’s life.
“He said he wanted to come to the club and give Peter an award.”
Mr Kirby, 46, visited the club, at Lakeside Methodist Chapel, on Tuesday to pay tribute to Peter’s good work.
He said: “I am very proud of what Peter has done. For a young lad to face a situation like that and react as he did is remarkable.
“Not only did he save Mr Lawson’s life
by doing everything right, he also helped keep the man’s partner calm until the ambulance arrived.
“I think it’s fantastic.”
Peter has had two courses with Mr Kirby and everything he learned obviously sunk in.
He said: “I didn’t really think about it at the time. Everything I learned just came back to me, but I didn’t ever think I would need it like this.”
