Family’s Lazy Dog ‘Saved Our Butts’
Published: February 19, 2007
On most days, Nick and Carrie Wolotowsky’s 11-month-old English bulldog “I’m the Boss” is one lazy pooch.
“Since the time we’ve had him when he was 8 weeks old … he’s never shown any aggression. He usually gets up to eat and go to the bathroom and then goes right back to sleep,” Nick Wolotowsky said.
So when Boss started barking “like a nut” around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, waking the South Elgin couple, they knew something wasn’t right.
Turns out an extension cord connected to a space heater in their basement had melted, creating a fire hazard.
The cord was draped over a wooden bar covered with newspaper, near the bedrooms of the Wolotowskys’ four kids.
“We definitely dodged a bullet,” Wolotowsky said. “If the bar did catch on fire, it would have been really bad. [Boss] saved our butts.”
The 65-pound bulldog was so determined to warn his owners that he broke through a security gate the family uses to keep their dogs from going downstairs. The family’s two other dogs remained asleep.
Alerted by Boss’ barking, Carrie Wolotowsky went to the basement and found Boss trying to wake their 9-year-old son, the only person whose bedroom door was open.
She thought Boss needed to go to the bathroom, but when she took him outside, he “started jumping at the back door, trying to get back in the house,” Nick Wolotowsky said.
Eventually, she smelled the melting cord and unplugged the heater, burning her hand. Once the danger was over, Boss was his old self. “Within 10 minutes, he was sleeping,” Nick Wolotowsky said.
The Wolotowskys say they will never use space heaters again. “I hope people reading this will be so careful about what they plug in. I’m so happy I’m still here,” Nick Wolotowsky said. He bought Boss a sausage, egg and cheese croissant as a reward.
