Family Reunited With Dog Missed for 5 Year
Published: February 16, 2007
A South Florida family got some high-tech help in locating their beloved family dog which had been lost for five years.
Kimba the German Shepherd was separated from her family in South Miami-Dade after a worker left a door open at the family’s home and she wandered away.
Her owner, Alberto Saavedra, had implanted a microchip in Kimba’s neck and kept the information updated even when the family moved.
For five long years, the Saavedra’s never heard anything about their dog and figured she was gone forever but that all changed this week when someone found a stray dog and took it to the Miami-Dade Animal Services shelter in Medley.
Workers there found a microchip in the dog’s neck. Using a hand-held scanner to read the information on the tiny microchip, they discovered it was Kimba and contacted her long lost family.
Kimba, who is eight years old, was finally reunited with her owners on Wednesday after a good bath and a good meal.
Alberto Saavedra told CBS4 that he was completely shocked when he found out Kimba had been found. “I was so surprised. I thought it would be a mistake or something like that. It’s very difficult to find a dog after so many years”, said Saavedra.
Shelter workers told our news partners at The Miami Herald that when Kimba went missing five years ago, someone probably picked her up and took care of her, then abandoned her after a while.
It’s believed Kimba had been living on the streets for at least a month.
A microchip implant for the purpose of pet identification is becoming more and more popular. AVID Microchip and Home Again Microchip are widely-used companies.
