A 39-year-old woman is recovering in a Valley hospital after she was rescued from a burning car this morning, according to Phoenix police officials.
The woman was driving near Jefferson and Seventh streets in downtown Phoenix about 5 a.m. when a Kenwood semi-tractor trailer attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Jefferson failed to yield and collided with her, authorities said.
The “violent” crash trapped the woman’s legs inside the car as the engine compartment burst into flames, authorities said.
Officers Andrew Miller and Joseph Wagner saw the collision and ran to the vehicle.
After several minutes trying to pry the door open, the Phoenix police officers smashed the driver-side window to free the woman’s legs from the debris and to pull her from the fiery car.
The driver of the semi-truck put the fire out using a fire extinguisher from his truck, according to police.
The woman was sent to a local hospital, with a broken leg, disorientation, and other serious but not life-threatening injuries. Her condition was not released by authorities.
Wagner was also taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke-inhalation suffered at the fiery scene. . The officer was released and is expected to be back to work tonight. The driver of the semi-truck will be cited for the collision.
