A YOUNG Burnley girl who jumped into an ice-covered canal to rescue two drowning dogs was herself saved by a local hero.
Nelson’s Gary Morton (16), of Cravendale Avenue, dragged the girl, also 16, out of the canal off Cravendale Avenue, Nelson, and then ran home to call the emergency services yesterday afternoon.
The girl, of Asian heritage, is believed to be a student at Nelson and Colne College’s Colne site. She was taken to Burnley General Hospital suffering from hypothermia.
The dogs managed to get out of the canal themselves and were taken to a local vets by members of Nelson’s fire crew.
Station Manager Mr Nick Clough said: “She’s been a very lucky young lady in the fact that someone was around to alert us - once you’re in the water it’s so cold that there’s no chance of getting yourself out.
“You just don’t know what would have happened if we hadn’t have been called as quickly as we were.”
