Boy, ‘Guardian Angel’ Reunite

Published: February 9, 2007

A little boy nearly died after a truck accidentally hit him in Clayton last October.

That’s when a stranger performed life-saving CPR on Colby Baker.

He now calls that stranger his guardian angel.

The two recently reunited in Ohio where Colby lives.

Five-year-old Colby and his guardian angel reunited earlier this month in Ohio. This was the first time Veleka Strickland had seen him since he left WakeMed in December.

The unlikely friends first met when he was visiting his biological mother in Clayton. That’s where a truck hit him on Halloween, fracturing his skull, bruising his brain, and breaking both of his legs along with a list of other serious injuries. He was barely alive when Strickland showed up.

Strickland said she actually took a different way home that night since there was an accident on her usual route.

The American Red Cross employee performed CPR for seven minutes.

She saved his life, but two spinal cord injuries paralyzed him from the chest down.

“He’s not gonna let this get him down. He’s not letting it get him down. He’s still trying to do all that he can do,” Strickland said.

“With something like this happening, you realize there are good people out there still that are willing to lend a hand, willing to help,” said Shawn Baker, the boy’s father.

Now Strickland’s set her sights on helping the bakers raise money. She wants to help them remodel their ground level basement to make things easier on them and especially Colby.

“By me being able to help assist at giving him new life, I look at that as a new beginning for us,” Strickland said.

It’s a new beginning for this mother of two who’s not only gained a son but also a lifelong friend.

If you’d like to contribute to the baker basement fund, an account has been set up at Wachovia bank under Shawn Baker’s name.
