Class Ring Returned 38 Years Later

While working at a carwash in the summer of 1968, Tony Brown heard a ping and realized his Lexington High School class ring had slipped off his soapy finger. He thought it went down a muddy drain and dug through the muck for 30 minutes. But no luck.
Fast forward nearly 40 years. It turns out the ring didn’t go down the drain. It bounced into the car — and has now been returned to Brown. The ring had spent all those years in a jewelry box belonging to the aunt of Rickey Ritter, a longtime friend of Brown’s. The aunt found the ring under the seat of her 1968 Buick, several months after it went through the carwash. She didn’t know whose ring it was, so she put it in the jewelry box and forgot about it.
After she passed away, Ritter and other family members came across the ring while looking through her belongings.
Ritter, a 1972 Lexington High graduate, said he noticed the “TMB” initials inside the ring and took out his old high school yearbooks. He called Brown, who gave an accurate description of the ring, and brought it to him.
“For all those years, I’d thought it was lost in a drain,” Brown said. “It’s good to get it back,” he told the Times Daily in a story Monday. “I loved my high school years. The ring doesn’t exactly fit anymore; it’s too big. But it’s great to have it just for the remembrance of those years.”
“Back when we were in high school, class rings meant a whole lot,” Brown said. “I thought I’d lost it forever, and I never really had a chance to wear it.”
But instead of focusing on the years without the ring, Brown views it as a present.
“At least I have a class ring that looks brand new,” he said.
