Man rescued before car ignites
Published: February 6, 2007
A 23-year-old Oakville man is alive today because quick-thinking police and Halton EMS workers pried him out of his wrecked car moments before it burst into flames after colliding with a truck.
Two Halton police officers and paramedics used tools they found in the truck to rip a door off and free the trapped man.
The drama occurred Tuesday just before 9:30 p.m. on Leighland Avenue near Robarts Road.
The rescuers were able to get the man out before his car’s engine compartment erupted in flames. The young man was taken to Hamilton General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 44-year-old man driving the truck was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.
Police said the car was westbound on Leighland and overtaking another vehicle when it collided with the eastbound flatbed.
